„Towards a New Era of Nation-States” examines the question of how European nation-states might reverse their decline in terms of unfavorable demographic tendencies, stagnating economic performance and their surrender of sovereignty to international institutions. This decline can be attributed in large measure to the European political culture that has profoundly shaped European political policy formation over the centuries. The domination of European political thought by universal doctrines has played a particularly important role in preventing the European nation-states from adequately asserting their sovereignty and national interests. In essence universal doctrines have misled Europeans into believing that they should take on the crushing burden of saving all of mankind. A particularistic worldview would be more advantageous to Europe than the currently dominant universal doctrines. This book attempts to formulate an updated, particularistic worldview, which might help Europeans in refocusing their attention on solving pressing local problems.
